Keep Standalone Command-Line Agents Updated Remotely
Request an update for any computer running the standalone Effigate command-line tool, and it installs itself safely without interrupting running work.
Summary
Computers running Effigate's standalone command-line tool, rather than the desktop app, can now be updated remotely with a single request. The update downloads safely in the background and is put in place automatically the next time that computer isn't running a task.
What You Gain
Teams that run agents from the standalone command-line tool, on a server or a machine without the desktop app installed, previously had no reliable way to update it from a distance — remote update requests had quietly stopped working for current installs, so keeping every machine current meant visiting each one by hand. For a team with several machines running agents around the clock, that's a real maintenance burden.
Now a remote update request downloads the correct version, verifies it against a published checksum, and keeps it ready while the current version keeps working. The moment that computer finishes its current task and has nothing running, it swaps in the new version automatically; if the swap can't complete, it simply keeps running the version it already has, so nothing breaks. A machine that's already current says so and doesn't restart for no reason.
How It Works
- One request updates any standalone machine. No need to be at the keyboard of the machine itself.
- Safe by design. The new version is checked against a published checksum before anything changes, and the swap only happens when the machine is idle.
- Falls back safely. If an update can't be installed, the machine keeps running on its current version rather than breaking.
- Desktop app machines are unaffected — they already update themselves, and now say so plainly if asked to update this way by mistake.
Where to Find It
Each machine needs this version installed once by hand, by re-running the installer; after that, updates can be requested remotely from anywhere.
